Description

The Gorham collection consists of papers of Florida A&M University professor, Thelma T. Gorham, 1913-1992. The Collection spans over Gorham’s lifetime. It includes papers, correspondence, photographs, greeting and postcards, and memorabilia. The arrangement of the collection is in both series and box identification. The series are: correspondence, educational and professional career, memorabilia, three- dimensional objects, JET Magazine collection, Ebony Magazine Collection, miscellaneous publications, miscellaneous articles collected by Gorham, photographs, audio and video, greeting and post cards, and pamphlets and brochures collected by Gorham, outside of the series are single boxes with box identification.

Letter and Accompanying Clippings and Envelope from Jess Dunson to Thelma T. Gorham, August 23, 1944

A letter to Thelma T. Gorham signed "Jess Dunson." Dunson briefly discusses the war and his sense that it would soon be coming to an end. Dunson also includes several newspaper clippings he believed would be of interest to Gorham.
Notebook 11 - Collected Autographs

Photo and document album contains various photos and documents of individuals who were either important to Gorham personally or famous. Contains a few letters to Supreme Justice Thurgood Marshall and his reply. Contains a form letter Gorham wrote for her dissertation. Contains materials on Thomasina Johnson Norford, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, the Women's Self Government Association at the University of Minnesota, Langston Hughes, Robert Hayes (American football player), Vernon Jarrett, Fort Huachuca. Contains signatures of Mary Mcleod Bethune, Thurgood Marshall, Langston Hughes, Shirley Chisholm, Robert Hayes, Vernon Jarrett. Contains a page of signatures from August, 1947(9?) which is notable for the inclusion of Richard Gorham.
Notebook 10 - Identified Photographs

Photo album contains photos of a variety of named people whom Gorham knew. Middle section of notebook contains photos with attached articles written by Gorham describing the scene in the photo, professional correspondence and documents. A great deal of these focus on the FAMU journalism department and its associated events. There are many photos and articles about the FAMU interscholastic press workshop, paper-writing awards, and award banquets. There are also photos of FAMU's 1963 homecoming.

Photo album of miscellaneous photos. Photos of Thelma Gorham, Pearl Mayo Winrow (Mrs. George W. Gore), George W. Gore, art in museums and studios, various formal photos of FAMU faculty at work, a few photos of FAMU classrooms with students, and several portraits of anonymous individuals. Photos are in black and white.

Album includes images of farm life, rural communities, Annie Lee Cooper (FAMU Dean of Women), Jackie Robinson, Langston Hughes, radio broadcasting, Pearl Mayo Winrow, Thelma Gorham, Welcome T. Bryant (?), Ann Allen Shockley, George W. Gore, the FAMU United Fund Committee, Florynce Kennedy, Freddie Lee (Gorham sister?), Constanza Johnson, Darryl Gorham, Governor Claude Kirk (Florida), Lyndon B. Johnson, Edmond J. Gong, Kappa Kappa Psi members, and contains various pictures of FAMU. Also contains a letter from Freddie L. Groomes to Thelma Gorham. Pictures in black and white, including many from the 1960s.

Photo album which largely contains photos of Thelma Gorham. Contains portraits, photos of her at professional events, pictures with family, photos from award banquets and others. Contains a few photos of individuals in Baháʼí dress. Also contains a few scattered papers attached to images.

Photo album with miscellaneous photos of Thelma Gorham, friends of Thelma Gorham, professional events related to FAMU, George W. Gore, and Pearl Mayo Winrow (Mrs. George W. Gore). Photos are generally formal and of formal events. A few photos have inscriptions on back. There are several unidentified individuals who show up repeatedly. Some photos show technical work, presumably done at Florida A & M. Majority of photos are in black and white.
