Having occurred previous to the presidential election, Rev. C. K. Steele from Bethel Missionary Baptist Church suspected it "as a Republican trick." However, as the article details, Rev. R. N. Gooden from St. Mary's Primitive Baptist Church thinks otherwise.

Hogan writes about the observance of Maundy Thursday by Bethel A. M. E. Church, and how it is distinctly a Judeo-Christian ritual that other churches do not practice.
